Barbie Art

Boxed Barbies are effective conversation pieces that evoke childhood memories and adult fantasies.

Amsterdam Barbie, the first of these pieces, was inspired by observations I made in Holland of prostitutes standing exposed in their decorated windows. The other pieces evolved with Barbies as vehicles for nostalgia, ridicule and amusement. Boxed Barbies offer a polarizing commentary on the various roles available to women or inhabited by them. While some of these art pieces are quirky and fun, others have darker undertones.

These pieces also incorporate an element of recycling. Each Barbie is positioned in a re-used mandarin orange crate decorated with fabric remnants, paint and other items that typically would end up as garbage, or at best, in a bag destined for the charity shop.
